One Short Article: Why Should You Make Writing Your Habit?

I wish I didn't have to say this. I wish it was obvious to every person who went to school. I wish schools had done a better job teaching it. I wish I didn't have to convince you of what I'm about to tell you.

You should write.

Every. Single. Day.

But school doesn't encourage writing at all. It sets constraints. Either you follow rules, or you get punished with lower grades. Are you trying to express yourself with writing? Not at school, my friend.

So you finish school convinced writing is:

  • boring

  • difficult

  • confusing

  • not for you!

Then, you start a career. You write emails, documentation, and other ultimately boring kinds of texts. It reinforces your negative emotions towards writing. So you have no doubt writing sucks.

I used to hate writing. Thanks, school! Thanks, job!

Luckily in December 2019, I gave writing a second chance. But for the first time, I wrote for myself. I removed all rules and constraints. All I had was freedom.

Almost immediately writing has become my passion.

Let's start with the benefits of writing. They are well-known and backed by research data. Because of writing:

  • you enhance learning

  • you clarify your thoughts

  • you slow down brain aging

  • you articulate your thoughts better

  • you boost your creativity and imagination

  • you improve your health and well being

  • you enhance your memory

  • you learn storytelling

Doesn't it sound like a life hack? Well, it is one. Writing habit generously pays off long-term.

Despite the benefits, you probably don't rush to start writing. You still think writing sucks. You still hate it. You still find it boring, confusing, and complicated. Maybe you don't know how to start.

Let's make it as easy as possible.

  • Take a pen and a piece of paper,

  • Write whatever comes to your mind.

You can do it for as long as you want. You can end up with one sentence, ten sentences, a bulleted list, or maybe even a short story.

No rules, no constraints. No rights or wrongs. No teacher, no boss.

Stop reading. I won't be mad. I'll be happier if you use the next few minutes to write rather than read. Of course, it will be awesome if you continue reading.

Congrats, you started your first journal. How does it feel?

Next, let's build a habit! Set aside 5 minutes a day for a week or two. Don't you have 5 minutes a day? Write for 2. Do you want to write for longer? No problem! Again, you've got the freedom to do what you want as long as you write.

It took me 3-4 days to fall in love with writing.

And I'll never stop.

I hope the same for you!

Two Quotes

  • "Each time you write a page, you are a writer. Each time you practice a violin, you are a musician. Each time you start a workout, you are an athlete. Each time you encourage your employees, you are a leader." James Clear, Atomic Habits

  • "Ideas are merely thoughts until you put them into action. Thoughts are fleeting, quickly fading as time passes." Tiago Forte, Building a Second Brain

One Neuroscience Fact: "Listen And Look Me In The Eyes"

If you want someone to listen to you, don't ask them to look you in the eyes. Our vision is more powerful than hearing (auditory system) in terms of focus. So if you stare at a small object, your mind will entirely focus on it while ignoring other sensory inputs. When someone looks straight into your eyes, he'll see the movement of your face. But he won't listen.

Have you noticed how often musicians close their eyes? Take piano players or singers. Now you know why.

Thanks for reading. See you next week.

Keep your brain in mind.
