One Short Article: Why Is Focus So Important For Learning?

The human brain is plastic, meaning it can change.

Let me start with the brain info:

  • your brain is designed to change

  • your brain is plastic during the whole lifespan

  • if you are over 25, you must pay attention to change your brain

  • your ability to focus is a skill you can get better at

Children and young people until the age of 25 can learn passively. It means the focus isn't necessary to change the brain. They can learn without paying attention.

However, at around age 25, you lose this ability. You still can attain knowledge. But to achieve that, you have to be deliberate.

It means the concentration is a must. Acquiring knowledge or adding a new skill requires paying attention to what you read, listen to, or watch. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.

You waste time if you:

  • Read and check your phone every 2 minutes

  • Learn and scroll social media

  • Write and watch YouTube

Your attention is scarce and precious. Make sure to treat it as such.

What you consume is what you produce. What you pay attention to is what you become.

Some people are up-to-date with all political news. Some know every celebrity trivia. Because they pay attention to that, they change their brain. But it's not a good change.

Your brain rewires every day. But remember this: Garbage in, garbage out. Is it how you want to rewire your brain? Of course not.

Learn to pay attention to things that serve you well.

I will dedicate the several following weeks to the attention topic. I'll focus on focus. I'll explain it from the neuroscience perspective; how does our nervous system change, and what happens in your body? Also, I'll give you practical, applicable tips. Lastly, I'll explain why it's become much harder to focus. Lastly, I'll talk about the importance of sleep.

It's impossible to talk about brain changes without mentioning sleep. It's essential for two reasons:

  • when you lack good sleep, you can't focus properly

  • physically, your brain changes during sleep

One Neuroscience Fact: Neuroplasticity In Young Age

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change itself. We are born with an enormous web of weak connections. Until age 25, we go through Developmental Plasticity. During this process, we mainly remove connections that don't serve us well.

Thanks for reading. See you next week.

Keep your brain in mind.
