One Short Article: To Learn Faster And Better, You Need to Know These 5 Concepts.

Schools teach us WHAT to learn, but not HOW to learn.

Learning how to learn is more important than ever. During the AI revolution, it's harder to stay relevant. But if you become a lifelong learner, you'll thrive. Show me successful people who rely on formal education.

"New opportunities rarely follow old education." MJ DeMarco

5 Concepts you must understand to become a better learner.

Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to change.

The common misconception is that only a child's brain changes. No, neuroplasticity is available at any age.

You trigger it when you learn a new skill or acquire knowledge.

The physical changes in your brain occur during sleep. If you sleep less to gain time during the day, you make a big mistake.

Prioritize sleep!

Focus and Diffused Mode

Concentration is necessary to trigger the learning process. The deeper your focus, the faster you can learn.

But the diffused mode is vital, too. Learn to defocus. It's when you zoom out to see the big picture.

But diffused differs from distracted. You want to free your mind, not occupy it with social media or YouTube. So instead:

  • meditate,

  • take a short nap,

  • go for a walk without a phone,

  • lie down with your eyes closed.

To learn efficiently, you need both modes.

Illusions of Competence

"Don't fool yourself. And you are the easiest person to fool." Richard Feynman

Illusions of competence are tricky. They fool you into believing you're making progress (simplify).

Examples:

  • rewriting

  • rereading

  • highlighting

  • memorizing solutions

  • watching others doing it

They are passive. To learn efficiently, you must activate your brain.

Active recall.

"Your brain learns through creation, not consumption." Jim Kwik

Active recall consists of 3 steps:

  1. Review the material.

  2. Close the material. Then say or write down everything you remember.

  3. Go through the material again to find gaps and correct mistakes.

The second step activates your brain. The Feynman Technique is the best example of using active recall.

Spaced Repetition

Assume you want to learn a new topic. But 60 minutes per week is all you can dedicate. Don't do 1x 60 minutes. Choose 6x 10 minutes because:

  • 10 minutes a day builds a habit,

  • focusing for 60 minutes is harder,

  • you'll switch between focus and diffused more often,

  • you'll remember more from the previous session because it was yesterday, not a week ago.

Summary

Learn how to learn. The sooner you do it, the more advantage you gain.

Two Quotes

  • "To discover your own potential, add water, love, perseverance, and lots and lots of time." David Shenk, The Genius in All of Us

  • "Delay retirement as long as possible. And when you do retire, don’t quit on life. Find activities that are joyful and stimulating. Stay engaged." Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Keep Sharp

One Neuroscience Fact: Your Brain Ages Slower When It Burns Mostly Fat.

Your brain is mostly out of fat (60% by weight).

When you consume a lot of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, you make your brain happy. And you increase its longevity!

The best Omega-3 resources:

  • fish: salmon, sardines, mackerel, cod,

  • avocados

  • walnuts,

  • olive oil.
